Image-Gamma Induced Errors

Gaussian Blur , example 4

Jpeg copy of the original.
Linear editing.
Gamma-space 2.2 editing.

The original in 16-bit mode is linear 14-bit acquire using Umax PowerLook III scanner into Photoshop 15-bit space and then cropped.

Gaussian Blur errors in gamma space:

  1. black edging or hue-errors are induced to sharp color borders.
  2. The effect of blur is not uniform, it is more strong in the shadows, weaker in highlights.

Linear space processing

  1. Open the original linear higher bit-depth image.
  2. convert to 8-bit mode.
  3. apply Gaussian Blur at radius = 3.
  4. apply inverse gamma 2.2.
  5. save as jpeg using quality factor 4.
